Governance

Located in Stockholm, Nordita is a leading research center in theoretical physics, fostering collaboration across the Nordic region and beyond. As one of Europe’s most dynamic hubs for theoretical physics, Nordita brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds to advance fundamental science.

Nordita is governed by a Board responsible for the institute’s strategic direction and scientific quality. The Board consists of seven to nine members, including a Chair, and a majority of the members must have strong scientific competence. The Presidents of Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Uppsala University each appoint one member. The Chair and remaining members are appointed by the President of Stockholm University after consultation with the President of KTH. The Board elects a Vice Chair from among its members. Members are appointed for three-year terms and should not serve more than two consecutive terms.

The Director reports to the Board and has the right to attend and speak at meetings. Observers representing Nordita staff may also attend and speak. The Board nominates the Director, who is formally appointed by the Presidents/Vice-Chancellors of KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, and is responsible for the institute’s scientific leadership and daily operations.

Nordita is not a separate legal entity and is administratively organized as an independent unit within Stockholm University, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor.

Funding and Support

Nordita is funded through support from the Swedish Research Council and its three host universities: KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University. Together, these institutions provide the foundation for Nordita’s research environment and its mission to advance theoretical physics through Nordic and international collaboration.
