Spacetime Emergence from Quantum Mechanics: From Theory to Observations

How can spacetime and physical subsystems emerge from quantum mechanics? This project studies locality, subsystem independence, quantum reference frames, and potential cosmological and laboratory signatures of emergent spacetime. It connects quantum foundations, quantum gravity, theoretical cosmology, and philosophy of physics.

The project investigates how quantum systems, their independence, and the structures we call spacetime should be defined when gravity is relevant. The work combines conceptual analysis with quantum-information and algebraic methods, while exploring potential observational or laboratory consequences that do not depend on a single microscopic reconstruction of spacetime.

Led by Guilherme Franzmann in NORDITA’s Quantum Foundations and Gravity group, the project is supported by Olle Engkvists Stiftelse (Olle Engkvist Foundation), award 225-0062, for 2024–2028.
