In a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Nordita Professor Alexander Balatsky and former Nordita postdoctoral researcher Pavlo Sukhachov, together with international collaborators, have demonstrated a new form of multiband magnon condensation at room temperature, whereas previous demonstrations of this type of condensatsion required extremely low temperatures.
The researchers achieved this by using microwaves to excite spin waves in extremely thin magnetic crystals. The success of the experiment relied on the quality of the crystals, which, together with the results themselves, provide starting points for future microwave technology.
The work grew out of an ERC Synergy Grant project in which Nordita and Stockholm University were partner institutions.
