About

Ville Lahtinen obtained his PhD from University of Leeds and is doing his first post-doc at Nordita. His research interests range from microscopic understanding of topologically ordered condensed matter systems to employing these systems to perform fault-tolerant quantum computation.

The research has particularly concentrated on spin lattice systems supporting topologically ordered phases. The body of the PhD work constituted of understanding how anyonic quasiparticles emerge in these systems and how they their characteristics are reflected in the microscopic degrees of freedom. The current focus is to expand on this knowledge and study the collective behavior of many anyon systems. The microscopics of a particular system can give rise to interactions between the anyonic quasiparticles, which can result in a rich pattern of new topological phases. The aim is to realize such transitions in a context of a spin lattice model and thereby pave way for their experimental realization.

Dr. Lahtinen has actively collaborated with researchers from the universities of Santa Barbara, Leeds, Paris and Dublin.
