Marcelo Dias
Nordita Fellow
About
Marcelo Dias received his PhD in 2012 from University of Massachusetts Amherst, and was then a postdoc at Brown University. Since 2014 he has a joint postdoc position at Aalto Science Institute (AScI), Aalto University, and Nordita.
Marcelo's main research interests lie within a broad range of topics in theoretical soft condensed matter. He uses techniques in differential geometry and continuum mechanics to understand how mechanical properties that an elastic body acquires arise from a careful design of its internal geometry in addition to its material composition. Applications to this class of problems include shape formation in nature, biomechanics, mechanics of structured materials, controlled design and functionality of thin plates and shells. He also works on problems in nematic liquid crystals and low Reynolds number hydrodynamics.
