Jani-Petri Martikainen

Nordita Assistant Professor

About

Jani-Petri Martikainen received his PhD at the University of Helsinki in 2001. After a postdocs at the ITP, University of Utrecht (the Netherlands) and the Nanoscience center of the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), he became a research fellow of the Academy of Finland. He started as an assistant professor at Nordita in 2008.

He works in the field of ultracold quantum gases. His current focus is on the physics of ultracold gases in optical lattices. He has explored the effects of the multiple bands both for fermionic as well as bosonic atoms. He is exploring the superfluid and insulating properties of first excited p-band atoms and investigating possible ways to enhance the stability of such systems. Furthermore, he works with the quantum many-body problem of a three component Fermi gas as well as with degenerate atoms in artificial gauge potentials.

In addition to local collaborations within Nordita, he collaborates with groups in Finland and Sweden with especially close contacts with groups in the Aalto University (Helsinki) and Umeå University. He is involved in the Nordic "Coherent quantum gases" network, supervises one PhD student in Stockholm, and organized the Nordita Masterclass 2009 for Nordic undergraduate students.
