About
Andong He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University in 2011. He then spent one year as a postdoc at Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) at Brown University. In July 2012 he came to Nordita as a visiting postdoctoral fellow. Starting from January 2013 he will join John Wettlaufer's group at Yale University.
The PhD work of Andong is in fluid mechanics, with a focus on Hele-Shaw flows and interfacial dynamics. He used mathematical methods, including complex variables and asymptotic analysis, and simple lab experiments to tackle these problems. His research interests have broadened to kinetic theory of gases and capillary interactions between floating objects.
At Nordita Andong is working with John Wettlaufer and Dhrubaditya Mitra on particle impaction and the resultant collisional fusion. One aspect of the project is to predict and compute the phase transition, associated fluid motion and solidification dynamics during collision of particles with high energy. A successful prediction of this new mechanism of particle agglomeration can help us understand the growth of planetesimals.
