About

Professor Alexander V. Balatsky is a theoretical condensed matter physicist and a Professor at Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, based at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm. He joined the Nordita faculty in September 2012 and holds a PhD from the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Moscow Physical Technical Institute, awarded in 1987. He later worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was an Oppenheimer Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2003 and a Los Alamos Fellow in 2005. Alongside his Nordita position, he has been a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Connecticut since 2017.

His research centers on strongly correlated materials, unconventional superconductivity, and biomolecular electronics. His broader interests include quantum materials, Dirac materials, multiferroics, quantum imaging, noise spectroscopy, materials informatics, and DNA spectroscopy. He has also worked on the anomalous mechanical properties of solid helium-4, heavy fermion theory, and the electronic properties of DNA–graphene hybrid structures. He has served on the Senior Advisory Group of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics
