The Nordita Summer Internship Program in Theoretical Physics provides an opportunity to selected Master students to get in touch and collaborate with top theoretical physicists at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita) in a collaboration with scientists from the following institutions in the Stockholm area:

The selected students will take part in research under the guidance of young and active supervisors at the frontiers of theoretical physics on various exciting research topics in hard and soft condensed matter, high-energy, particle physics, astrophysics, and quantum information. There will be also a chance to participate in various academic activities in Nordita, including seminars as well as in-house workshops, programs, and conferences.

Duration and format

Dates of the internship are flexible, duration is for a minimum of two months and a maximum four months during spring/summer the year after the deadline.

The topic and the concrete supervisor will be decided for the selected students after the acceptance of the application.

The internship will by default be organized in remote format. In exceptional cases there might be the possibility of an in-person format with partial financial support from a supervisor’s group. This should be discussed directly with the potential supervisor before the acceptance of the application.

After the successful completion of the internship, all the students will be given participation certificates and recommendations for their future career.

Requirements

The applicant must be registered as a Master's student (in the exceptional cases advanced Bachelor's students will also be considered). No research plan or prior contacts to potential supervisors are needed.

Application

An application for summer internship should be submitted in two parts via email to summer-intern@nordita.org and should contain the following data:

  1. A single PDF file (sent to the above email with subject "Stockholm summer internship 2025-<name of the student>") containing
    • a cover letter,
    • a Curriculum Vitae,
(with applicant's name and e-mail, home institute, start and prospective end dates and topic of MSc thesis (if started), name and e-mail of applicant’s MSc thesis advisors, previous research experience and publications (if any), list of the previous research internships, awards and fellowships; for Indian applicants the results of the entrance/screening exams like JEE, JAM, JEST and awards like INSPIRE, KVPY with the absolute rank, not %, and total number of participants.),
    • an official (provisional) transcript for Bachelor's/Master's studies, with the information regarding courses and university or entrance exams taken and performance in them,
    • a separate motivation letter,
(with the preferred directions and potential supervisors for possible internship among Nordita strands)
The CV, and a separate transcript, should contain information regarding courses and university taken and performance in them.
  2. One or two reference letters in support of the application (independently sent by supervisors and/or senior colleagues to the email address given below with subject "Stockholm summer internship 2025-REF-<name of the student>").

Complete applications should be sent to summer-intern@nordita.org with the subject line "Stockholm summer intern 2025" before the deadline November 10, 2024.
