Each year Nordita hosts a Day of Open Doors where Master’s students from the nearby universities are invited to visit and get to know the institute and the research that is conducted here. This year we were glad to be able to welcome 35 students from Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Uppsala University.
The event began with a few words of welcome from Nordita’s director, Mikael Fogelström, who briefly introduced Nordita and the day’s program. After that, Nordita postdocs and young faculty members presented their areas of research. The talks covered a wide range of topics, from hard and soft condensed matter to astrophysics, as well as high-energy physics, and quantum information and networks.
“The event combined informative talks, a tour of Nordita’s premises, and informal discussions in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere,” said Ivan Khaymovich, assistant professor at Nordita and the main organizer behind the event. In between the talks, participants enjoyed fika (coffee with pastries) and were treated to a guided tour of Nordita’s premises. While Nordita is a purely theoretical physics institute, the tour displayed its creative work environment by showcasing the “experimental labs” - spaces for puzzles, board football, a pool table and even a children’s corner.
The day concluded with discussions in smaller groups, where students and researchers were able to introduce themselves, ask questions, and talk about potential master’s projects.
For those who missed the opportunity to attend, be sure to keep an eye on Nordita’s website for information about future events.
